Six ways to stay socially active this winter

Humans are social animals by nature, no matter our age. As we get older, our social needs may be more difficult to fill due to health problems, mobility challenges and a shrinking social network, which may contribute to the feelings of loneliness and social isolation experienced by many older adults. While social needs vary from person to person and may change with age, it is important to maintain relationships with family or friends. Volunteering or participating in recreational activities, such as walking groups, are other great ways to stay socially active.

We have compiled a few helpful resources and ideas to keep you engaged this winter, and throughout the year:

·      Volunteer

·      Visit your nearest public library for activities and programs

·      Join a walking group

·      Participate in artistic activities like singing, dancing, art or music

·      Try an exercise program such as, yoga, resistance training or aquafit

·      Visit a men’s shed
