Boost your defences and minimize your risk this cold and flu season

As the leaves change colour and the air becomes crisper, autumn reminds us that cold and flu season is on the horizon. Staying healthy during this time is especially important for older adults, as our immune systems can weaken with age, making them more susceptible to illness. The good news is that you can bolster your defences and minimize the risk of getting sick with a few evidence-based strategies.

1. Get vaccinated:
  • Flu shot: An annual flu shot is your best defence against influenza. It's specifically designed to protect against the strains most likely to circulate each season.

2. Boost Your Defenses:

  • Prebiotics and probiotics can help flu shots stick. Research has found that prebiotic or probiotic supplements can improve the vaccine's effectiveness before a flu shot.
  • Take Vitamin D to ward off acute respiratory tract infections. Research studies have found supplementation with vitamin D3 can prevent acute respiratory tract infections.
  • Healthy habits: Eat a balanced diet, sleep well, and stay active to strengthen your immune system.
  • Hydration is key: Drink plenty of fluids to help your body fight off any potential infections.

3. Minimize Your Risk:

  • Wash your hands: Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public.
  • Clean and disinfect: Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces in your home, like doorknobs and countertops.
  • Stay home if you're sick: Protect yourself and others by staying home if you're feeling under the weather.

Implementing these strategies can help you enjoy the beauty of autumn without being sidelined by illness. Read more in our resources below.
