Thriving through the holidays: 4 strategies for a happy and healthy season

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for many, it can also be a challenging period for maintaining health and well-being. With many indulgences, busy schedules, and potential stressors, it's crucial to prioritize our health during this festive time. We have compiled four strategies to help you prioritize your health while enjoying the festive time of year.

Be mindful of portion size

The holiday season is synonymous with indulgent feasts and sweet treats. When it comes to overeating, size does matter! People offered food and beverages in larger quantities tend to consume more than if served in smaller amounts. Ordering smaller portions and having food served on small plates can help prevent overindulging. Whether eating out at a restaurant or attending a holiday event at someone’s home, consider asking for a smaller plate to keep your portions reasonable.

Limit alcohol intake

Consider limiting your alcohol intake to one drink for women and no more than two for men. While alcohol is one of life’s pleasures for many people, too much of a good thing can have negative consequences. Need a little motivation to help you? The association between alcohol and serious diseases, including cancer, may be motivation to “cut yourself off” and enjoy a healthier life in the long run.

Make time for exercise

Maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for overall health, especially during the holidays as life gets busy and it becomes more challenging to stick to regular routines. Whether it's a brisk walk in the crisp winter air, gentle stretching exercises, or joining a local fitness class, staying active can boost mood, increase energy levels, and help manage stress. If you feel pressed for time, high-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, may be a great alternative. HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise interspersed with longer periods of slower activity as recovery time. HIIT is an effective way to burn calories and may also help decrease risk factors for chronic disease.

Prioritize rest and relaxation

The hustle and bustle of the holidays can sometimes lead to stress and fatigue, but getting a good night’s sleep goes a long way towards helping you feel your best. Maintain good sleep hygiene by following a consistent sleep schedule, creating a calm bedtime routine, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment. Taking short breaks to practice deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga can also effectively manage stress and promote relaxation.
